Gay Marriage Good for the Economy

I’m sure you’ve already seen “Prop 8 – The Musical” posted at  It is a hysterical, but (in my opinion) logical look at Prop 8.  In the end, the proponents of Prop 8 are won over when they realize that gay marriage will actually be good for the economy.  Funny…but is there some truth in that?

The Williams Institute at the UCLA School of Law thinks there is. Never heard of them?  Well, I like ’em!  This is how they describe themselves on their web site:

The Williams Institute advances sexual orientation law and public policy through rigorous, independent research and scholarship, and disseminates it to judges, legislators, policymakers, media and the public.

Pretty cool, huh?  Their home page lists their recent reports studying the impact of gay marriage (and gay adoption) on multiple states, as well as census studies.

Their most recent report, The Economic Impact of Extending Marriage to Same-Sex Couples in the District of Columbia (Christopher Ramos, M. V. Lee Badgett, and Brad Sears, April 2009), found that gay marriage in D.C. will be a nice boost for the local economy and create jobs.  Here’s a snippet from the Executive Summary:

Extending marriage to same-sex couples will boost the District of Columbia’s economy by over $52.2 million over three years, which would generate increases in local government tax and fee revenues by $5.4 million and create approximately 700 new jobs.

Their studies of Vermont, Maine and California have resulted in similar increased revenue and job growth.

The happy news: we are an important factor in the economy and can make a difference.  If you doubt that, then just look at the quick turnaround that Amazon has made after the recent “glitch” excluding GLBT content in sales rankings.

So remember than you matter and you are important, as a human being and as a citizen.  Anyone who says you aren’t is simply verbally vomiting their own issues.

And I gotta send out some loving to all the activists and people fighting for our rights.  Whether you’re a doing a study, holding a sign, or boycotting Jamaica, you are making a difference…so thank you!
