Happy Gay News for April 22, 2009

Happy day all! There’s just tons of happy gay news today, Wednesday, April 22, 2009, so let’s get to it.

Washington’s Governor Gregoire Signs Transgender Hate Crimes Bill

Good stuff!  Love me some state of Washington!

Washington’s hate-crime law makes it a felony to threaten, damage the property of, or physically injure someone because of ethnicity, nationality, religion, gender, disability or sexual orientation.  The law Gov. Gregoire just signed will expand the definition of sexual orientation to include “gender expression or identity” so that our hate crimes statutes protect transgender people too. (Pam’s House Blend)

And special love to Equal Rights Washington, Washington Student Lobby, and David Iseminger, in particular. Great work!

Although it still has a little ways to go before becoming law, this is a great reminder that we are making progress everywhere.

Ancient Gay Marriage

Gay marriage is not a new concept.

As Africa was the birthplace of civilization it should come as no surprise to find that the earliest known reference to same-sex marriage in history can also be found there. (World of Wonder)

Great Twittering from GLAD Today

GLAD Twittered from the Maine marriage equality hearing today.  There are some amazing stories (even at Twitter length) from GLBT families.  You should definitely take a moment to read through today’s coverage. Here are a sampling of some of my favorite Tweets:

This bill about two people, who love each other, have agreed to care for each other, as long as they both shall live. (Bill sponsor Senator Dennis Damon)

Rep Kange: It is wrong to send rights of a minority out to a majority vote.

Kate’s mom: You know proponents are serious when they are willing to acquire mothers-in-law!

Bev: With wife Sue, son Ben. With lovely gram in wheelchair and lots of family.

Bev: Another Ben was her grandpa. Staunch Catholic, was afraid to tell him till his 60th wedding anniversary. He was happy for her.

Bev: Beg you to allow my grandfather to see my legal marriage from heaven.

Bob Talbot: Older civil rights leader. Married white woman. They said it was against nature. Sound familiar?

Bob Talbot: Discrimination was wrong 40 years ago; it’s wrong now! (APPLAUSE)

Paul Rediker, wife, and 2 beautiful adult daughters. We are Catholics and support LD 1020.

Mr. R: I’m a bear protecting his cubs. One daughter, straight, will get married this summer. One daughter, gay, cannot.

Mr. R: We love our daughters equally. Marriage is not a prize or a privilege, it’s a right. Rights belong to everybody.

Philip Spooner: 86 yr old Republican. All 4 sons, including gay son, were in the service. Was WW II medic.

Mr. Spooner: Was in Battle of the Bulge and liberation of Paris. What do you think I fought for? Equality.

Mr. Spooner: This is a nation worth dying for. I’ve seen consequences of systems that make some people less than others.

Mr. Spooner: Raised all our boys to be hardworking Americans, and they all did good. Let gay people have the right to marry. Thank you.

…Dr. Daniel Summers, pediatrician speaking on behalf of American Academy of Pediatrics in support of LD 1020.

Dr. Summers: Love & devotion of g/l couples to their children differs not a bit from that of straight people. Quality of parenting counts

Dr. Summers: We support LD 1020 because it has important implications for children, and can help them emotionally and financially.

There is lots more…and it is so worth the read!

Britney comes out for gay marriage following Miss California row

I am really tired of this Miss California story.  However, I am enjoying hearing who is speaking out against her.

Expressing her thoughts through Twitter, Britney wrote: “Love is love! People should be able to do whatever makes them happy!”

Devout Christian Miley Cyrus also used her Twitter page to show her support for same-sex marriage inisisting Jesus loves people of all sexual orientations equally: “Jesus loves you AND your partner and wants you to know how much he cares! thats like a daddy not loving his lil boy cuz hes gay and that is WRONG and very sad! like i said everyone deserves to be happy.”

Justice for Angie Zapata

Although this isn’t really a happy story, justice being served is such a good thing. Allen Ray Andrade is guilty first degree murder and multiple other counts. He was sentenced to life without parole.

It was the first time in the nation that a state hate crime statute resulted in a conviction in a transgender person’s murder, the advocacy group Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation said. (CNN.com)
