Happy Gay News for May 1, 2009

Better late than never, right?  We watched Seven Pounds last night, which should have been sponsored by Kleenex.  We were balling our eyes out but liked it.  OK, enough about that, let’s get right to the happy gay news for May 1, 2009.

Another Poll Shows Big Jump In Support for Gay Marriage in Just One Month

CBS News/New York Times Poll Data from 4/22-26/2009 (CBS graphic)

Just since March 2009, support for Gay Marriage has increased 9%!  So all the coverage over the protests and rallies are the voices of a dwindling minority.  And when NOM says they represent the majority of Americans, then they are simply mistaken (surely they wouldn’t knowingly tell an outright lie).

Forty-two percent of Americans now say same sex couples should be allowed to legally marry, a new CBS News/New York Times poll finds. That’s up nine points from last month, when 33 percent supported legalizing same sex marriage.

Support for same sex marriage is now at its highest point since CBS News starting asking about it in 2004.

Here’s another happy gay number: when you combine marriage & civil unions, 67% of Americans support legal recognition for gay couples.  That’s pretty darn happy!

National Equality Rally Sunday, May 3rd in Philly

Too cool! I wish I lived anywhere near Philly.

Join organizations, grassroots activists and straight allies from across the nation as we demonstrate at Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell—the site where the Gay Pioneers launched our movement with protests each Fourth of July from 1965 to 1969.

Call on Congress and our new president for:

  • Passage of trans-inclusive hate crimes legislation and Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA)
  • Repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” and the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA)
  • Support for GLBT health issues
  • Equal benefits for same-sex families
  • Same-sex marriage Equality

As Harvey Milk said: “All men are created equal. No matter how hard they try, they can never erase those words. That is what America is about.”

Lesbian chosen as UK poet laureate

Congratulations to Carol Ann Duffy!

Britain on Friday awarded the role of national poet laureate to Carol Ann Duffy – the first woman to hold a post that has been filled by William Wordsworth, Alfred Lord Tennyson and Ted Hughes…

A witty and popular writer whose work is widely taught in British schools, Duffy is also the first openly gay laureate.

Duffy, 53, said she had thought “long and hard” before accepting the high-profile job, which has a 10-year term. She said she’d given the final decision to her 13-year-old daughter.

“She said, ‘Yes mummy, there’s never been a woman,’” Duffy said. The laureate is officially appointed by the queen on the advice of the government. Prime Minister Gordon Brown called Duffy “a truly brilliant modern poet who has stretched our imaginations by putting the whole range of human experiences into lines that capture the emotions perfectly.”

  1. So much good news, but I’m especially thrilled about Carol Ann Duffy because I’ve been a fan of her poetry for a long time. She’s got an especially good book called The World’s Wife, which gives a lot of women (Little Red Riding Hood, Medusa, Aesop’s wife, etc.) a chance to tell their own stories from their perspective.
